Missoula is changing, and for many of us, it’s getting harder to recognize. As a fourth-generation Missoulian, I remember when our town was a place where a young family could thrive on a single income and a dream. Today, high taxes and rising costs are pushing that dream out of reach.

I’m Michael HagEstad. I’m an attorney, an economist, and most importantly, a husband and father. I’m running for House District 97 because you deserve a representative who understands the real-world economics of your kitchen table.

What Michael Will Fight For

Skyrocketing property taxes are forcing multi-generational Missoula families out of their homes. Career politicians in Helena have offered band-aid solutions while spending record surpluses. We must ensure that Montanans aren't taxed out of the homes they’ve spent a lifetime building. I will protect your financial stability from government-driven inflation.

Missoula is becoming a place where you can grow up, but you can’t afford to stay. Excessive regulations have made housing nearly impossible for the next generation. As a father raising two young sons here, I have a direct stake in this fight. I will work to slash the regulatory "red tape" that drives up construction costs and stifles small business growth. By applying sound economic principles, we can increase housing supply and lower the cost of living without sacrificing our community’s character.

Missoula faces rising challenges with drug-related crime and vagrancy that impact our local businesses and public spaces. I will stand firmly with our law enforcement. I support fully funding our police and ensuring they have the tools to keep violent offenders and drug traffickers off our streets. We need a legal system that prioritizes the rights of law-abiding citizens.

For too long, our representative has voted in lockstep with a left-wing caucus rather than the specific needs of HD 97. We need a representative who understands the law. I know how to navigate the legislative process to get results. I will be ensuring that every bill coming out of Helena passes a simple test: Does this make life better for the people of Missoula?
